THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

In Matthew 22:36, a certain lawyer from the company of the Pharisees asked Jesus…
*Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law ?*
Ordinarily everyone was expecting Our lord Jesus Christ to say, don’t steal or don’t kill.
But surprisingly Jesus said in verse (37)
*You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind*
(Compare Deuteronomy 6:5.)
In fact’ philosophically speaking, that answer was indeed very strange, considering the fact that not everyone of us understand that a human being can love or hate God.
Moreover” not everyone can explain how we can love or hate God.
Some might say that it is through giving quality tithes and offering that we prove our love for God.
But if that is the case, it means that thieves and ritualists loves God the most because most fraudsters, armed robbers and corrupt politicians steal money from the public purse and go to churches to make heavy donations in order to be seen as good people.
Another school of thought will say that those who build houses (churches) for God like king Solomon are the ones who truly loves God.
But there thousands of Drug Lords and notably ritualists who singlehandedly built churches for their local communities with the money they made by spilling innocent blood.
Does that mean that they truly loved God and still destroy the lives of others just to get money to impress the public ?.
*Note* : Love is a strong emotional feeling of affection and care towards another person and you can not love someone (God) and destroy his properties (human lives)
*But how then can someone love God ?* .
Our lord Jesus Christ haa answers to this question in John 14:23a…
*If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word*
Also in John 14:15 Jesus says…
*“If you love Me, keep My commandments* .
And finally in 1 John 5:3 the scripture says…
*For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome*
Now those commandments of God also involves that we must also love our neighbours like ourselves (Lev 19:18, mtt 22:39)
But some of us may ask, ” *How can keeping the commandment of God correlate with loving God ?*
Now I want us to know that love is deeper than lifeless emotional sentiments which people confess without practising.
Love is a living feeling which is exhibited through positive actions.
Love is a practical behaviour which must be manifested through our good actions before it would be noticed.
Now some of may say that they love God because they belong to a local church and sings in the choir, whilst they are still swimming in immorality.
Others will say that they love God and preach the gospel, but they found it difficult to live without sin .
My brother do not be deceived.
The bible says in 1John 3:9…
*Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God*
There are millions of marine agents who attends churches to lure others to sin through sexual immorality and if you are one of them (Sorry)
There are thousands of occultic pastors all over the world who still preaches the gospel of perdition to deceive the gullible.
But that doesn’t mean that they love God.
Remember that the Lucifer always want to imitate God in everything, including pretentious charity works and fake piety.
Jesus summarized the ten commandments as LOVE. In fact He called it a new commandment – John 13:34.
